The Indianapolis Colts got a huge boost to its AFC South Division hopes this past weekend with a 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans. However, the victory came at a huge price, as star quarterback Andrew Luck apparently suffered a concussion during the game.

Luck is still going through the NFL concussion protocol and with only three days before the Colts’ Thanksgiving Night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it appears backup quarterback Scott Tolzien is going to get the call.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that very development:

Tolzien was brought in from the Green Bay Packers this offseason, and is no stranger to making a start or two in replacing a star quarterback. However, that experience came in 2013, as Tolzien replaced an injured Aaron Rodgers for a pair of games. Since then, Tolzien attempted all of one pass last season and hasn’t seen regular season action at all.

Overall, the Wisconsin Badgers product has bounced around the NFL since signing as a free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2011. But he’s only appeared in six career games, throwing a total of 91 passes.

What seems to be a mystery is the severity of Luck’s concussion and exactly which play or situation actually caused it. One theory is that this hit and how Luck landed is where it occurred:

Tolzien was far from inadequate as a backup in Green Bay, completing 61.5 percent of his passes for 717 yards. However, he’s thrown five interceptions to just one touchdown so far in his career.

Going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense on short notice is not exactly an ideal situation, but few teams have ideal situations with backup quarterbacks — even the New England Patriots. Still, there is some small hope for Luck to make a quick recovery and pass concussion protocol. As NFL.com points out, Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams was concussed in a Sunday Night game in Week 6 and was not only able to play in Week 7, but made it back for a Thursday Night game.

However, that is almost certainly an exception and it appears the Colts could hit a major roadblock to its hopes in the AFC South without Luck.
