during Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium on February 7, 2016 in Santa Clara, California.

Von Miller is the reigning Super Bowl MVP, and may be the best defensive player in the National Football League. Naturally, he wants to be paid as such, and the franchise tag valuation of $14.129 million this season doesn’t seem to be enough.

Jason LaCanfora reports that Miller is seeking between $65-70 million in guaranteed money, which would surpass Ndamukong Suh’s contract from last offseason as the richest ever in league history for a defensive player. But, as NFL Network’s Albert Breer has reported, both sides in the negotiation are admitting Miller will likely take a “hometown discount”, whatever that means.

Suh’s contract came in at $114 million over six years, with $60 million of that guaranteed. Naturally, that contract is an albatross and the new Dolphins front office is attempting to restructure that deal. Would Miller be willing to take a hometown discount off the Suh contract, or what he’s actually worth, which is far closer to the franchise tag valuation? And, further complicating matters, the Broncos have other important contract decisions to make on players like Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan and even Brock Osweiler. Though the salary cap is up $12 million to around $155 million this season, there just isn’t enough room for everyone in Denver.

Though, Breer later noted, Miller would probably get more on the open market than Suh did if he tested the waters, but he wouldn’t be on nearly as good of a team. Whether Miller wants that or the promise of QB like riches is going to be a major question in these negotiations, which will be one of the most fascinating talking points of this NFL offseason.
