The NFL is constantly looking for ways to improve the on-field product. Sometimes this comes in the form of new rules, while other times this means using technology to make sure that the calls made on the field are the correct ones.
Now, the league is looking to take things a step further. Much was made about the MLB using robot umpires next season, but according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, that may be too narrow a scope.
“Roger Goodell told reporters that the NFL is looking into how AI might be able to help out officiating in the future,” reported ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

“AI is going to start treating Mahomes like a regular quarterback though. Can’t have that,” one fan wrote on TWitter.
“Need it.. these refs are terrible… any job where you cant be criticized by your peers tells you that youre doing a (bad) job,” someone else added.
“Omg, NFL is my fav sport but might not watch if this happens. They can’t get replay right re: Hockenson catch in end zone last Sunday,” anotehr fan added.
If the league actually moves to AI, it’ll be interesting to see how many fans turn their back on the sport forever.
