NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has managed to pull off two major deals for the NFL that are giving the league equity in two of its broadcast partners, CBS and ESPN. But even before the massive successes, Goodell had already made it clear that he believes the NFL is heads and shoulders above the other professional sports leagues in the United States.
A quote has made its way out from Ken Belson’s upcoming book, EVERY DAY IS SUNDAY: How Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, and Roger Goodell Turned the NFL into a Cultural & Economic Juggernaut, per Awful Announcing.
“We’re not competing with the NBA or MLB. Our competitors are Apple and Google,” Goodell allegedly said.
Fans reacted to Goodell’s bold statement on social media.
“There’s overlap in competition, but Google isn’t necessarily in the entertainment business like Apple is and I doubt that NFL Fiber will be an ISP someday. Nor am I holding out for an NFLBook,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Each year I like the NFL less and less,” someone else added.
“Bold and revealing statement,” another person added.
It’ll be interesting to see what the equity deals mean for the NFL and its reign of dominance over other pro leagues in the United States.
