Ron Rivera and Bill Murray Bill Murray met with Ron Rivera at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, offering the Commanders coach words of encouragement.

Among the celebrities converging on the Monterey Peninsula for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is Washington Commanders head coach, Ron Rivera. While Rivera is native to the Monterey Peninsula and attended nearby Seaside High School, this is his first year playing in his famed hometown event. While at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he spoke to a celebrity who’s a lot more familiar with the event, Bill Murray.

Murray approached Rivera, shook his hand and immediately gave him some words of encouragement, saying “Man, I’m so proud of you.” The two later posed for a picture, with the photographer directing them to “Say ‘Go Bears’ on 3.” While Murray, a longtime fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicagoland native native, obliged, Rivera, wearing a Commanders hat, said, “Go Commanders.”

Regardless of what one thinks of him as a coach, Rivera has an inspiring story. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2020 and was deemed cancer free the following year. While fighting cancer, he also helped lead Washington the the NFC East crown during the 2020 season.

Before becoming a coach, Rivera was a player. His entire NFL career was spent with Murray’s favorite team, the Bears, from 1984-1992.

Rivera is paired with professional, Kevin Roy while Murray is with his longtime playing partner, D.A. Points. Points won both the professional tournament in 2011 as well as the pro-am portion with Murray.

Both Rivera and Murray were both at Spyglass Hill on Thursday, Monterey Peninsula Country Club on Friday and will be at Pebble Beach for Saturday’s third round.
