The sale of the Washington Commanders appears to be imminent, with an ownership group spearheaded by Josh Harris/Mitchell Rales appearing to match the asking price of disgraced owner Dan Snyder.

This may create an uncomfortable situation for Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.

Rivera has been with the Commanders for each of the last three seasons. He has failed to produce a winning record for the team in his tenure, which may have him on the hot seat. This is especially the case when a new ownership group potentially buys the organization.

The veteran head coach seems to understand the pressures on him heading into the 2022-23 season. He got brutally honest about his situation, realizing that his job could be on the line if a new ownership group wants to go in another direction.

“There will be a discussion about what happened over the last three years,” Rivera told Ben Standig of The Athletic on a new ownership group potentially coming into the fold. “I’ll be honest. I’ll be upfront. Tell the truth. I’ll talk about the vision and what I think will happen. The owner has got to be able to believe in what I’m talking about. Hopefully, I can do that. And if not, I’ll be gone in a year.”

If a new ownership group does indeed buy the Commanders from Snyder, it could very well be the end for Ron Rivera in Washington. We saw a similar situation when the Denver Broncos parted ways with Nathaniel Hackett, who was hired prior to the team’s sale in 2022 and fired after the season.

Rivera could need a spectacular season next year to keep his job. They have an unclear quarterback situation at the moment with Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke in the mix, so that may be a difficult hurdle for Rivera as well.
