It was reported on Thursday that Dan Snyder had found a buyer and would sell the Washington Commanders.
A day later, Washington’s coach, Ron Rivera, opened up on the pending sale.
Rivera expressed relief that what’s been a lengthy process is finally coming to an end.
“Kind of relief,” Rivera said, per Jarrett Bell, USA Today. “It really seemed like a load was lifted, because everybody was on pins and needles for the last couple of months,” Rivera said, reflecting on the reaction. “You kind of wondered what was going to happen.”
It’s understandable that anyone within the organization would be eager for the sale to get done. A business being sold is a trying experience even in the best of times. When a controversial owner like Snyder is finally selling the team, any delay can certainly cause a sense of fear that the deal may not take place. So, from that end, Rivera’s reaction to this news is not surprising.
For someone in Rivera’s position, though, it’s an interesting take.
Rivera is heading into his fourth season with the Commanders, posting a 22-27-1 record over his first three years. While Washington did win the NFC East in 2020, Rivera’s first season with the team, he’s yet to lead the team to a winning season. So, he was already likely on the hot seat.
With a new owner coming aboard Rivera’s job security is even more tenuous, something he’s well aware of.
So, while the sale may well bring relief to Rivera, it will also add a significant amount of pressure for the upcoming season.
