Just a few weeks ago, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera made quite a bold proclamation when he said that the team would be moving forward into the offseason with Sam Howell as their first-team quarterback, and. But apparently, that doesn’t make him the “starting” quarterback.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Ron Rivera was asked about Sam Howell as the team’s starter, and he had quite a surprising response, declaring that Howell is “not our starter,” but just that he will enter the offseason as the team’s first-string quarterback.
“He’s not our starter,” Rivera said according to Nicki Jhabvala. “He’s coming in as QB1 and he’ll get a chance to be the starter.”

He added they’re looking to add a veteran and indicated Taylor Heinicke could be in the mix.

Rivera also indicated that the team is indeed looking to add a veteran quarterback to the roster, despite previous reports that they would not be entertaining that idea. He also revealed that Taylor Heinicke could also compete for the starting job.
All in all, Rivera’s comments on Tuesday were quite far off from everything that’s been said about this situation over the past several weeks, and the NFL world had plenty to say about the surprising change.
Probably not what most of the fan base wants to hear. https://t.co/kVrxXTgfGM

Further proof that the Commanders don't know what they're doing with their QB situation. https://t.co/K1WCLhqFFb

It’s a surprising development and we’ll just have to see how the situation plays out in Washington.
