The coach’s challenge is an important part of the NFL game, allowing coaches to serve as a way to check the officials from the sidelines and make sure they are getting the calls correct during a game. And the Detroit Lions are trying to make sure coaches have more opportunities to challenge a play.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Lions have submitted proposals to the league that would change the coach’s challenge in two ways: giving coaches a third challenge if either of their first two challenges were successful and allowing coaches to challenge all personal fouls.
Under the current rules, coaches may only earn a third coach’s challenge only if both of their previous challenges are successful. The new rule would mean that coaches would only have to win one of their first two challenges in order to earn a third challenge.
As for the other proposed change, personal foul penalties are not currently reviewable, but the proposal would change that, allowing coaches to challenge when a personal foul is called. It’s worth noting, however, that this would only apply to calls actually made – the proposal would not allow for coaches to challenge a missed call.
They would be some major changes to the game, and the NFL world had plenty to say about them on Twitter.

I’ve never understood this. The point of a challenge is to attempt to correct a wrong call on the field. If you continue to challenge calls and win then it should be unlimited.

If you win two challenges in the row the officiating crew should be replaced on the spot.

We’ll have to see if these rule changes pass and how they might be implemented this upcoming season.
