The New York Giants brought in both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson at the quarterback position, making some question who will ultimately be the Day one starter in New York. But according to Wilson, he fully plans on taking the reins right away as the leader of the Giants.
During his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Wilson spoke about his expectations coming onto his new team. Right away, Wilson made it incredibly clear that he is coming to New York with the expectation of starting.
“Yeah, I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day,” Wilson said during an introductory news conference, transcribed by ESPN. “I think this team’s really looking for somebody to lead them in every way.”
Obviously, Wilson is the most established quarterback option on the Giants. But while Wilson had some good moments this past season in Pittsburgh, Winston had his fair share of his own in Cleveland, filling in as their starter after the season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson.
In his seven games as the Browns starter, Winston threw for over 300 yards with multiple passing touchdowns three times. This is a feat that Wilson did just once in his 12 games as the Steelers’ starter.
Unfortunately for Winston, the issue plaguing him throughout his entire career, turning the ball over, reared it’s ugly head once again this past season, with 12 interceptions on the year compared to just five from Wilson.
It can be argued that Winston perhaps presents the Giants with the best chance to move the ball this coming season. But with that being said, is head coach Brian Daboll willing to sacrifice the good plays from Winston for the reckless ones that come along with that?
Only time will tell. But clearly, Wilson is confident that he will be heading into their season-opener as the Giants’ starting quarterback.
