Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson throws an interception against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Denver Broncos and quarterback Russell Wilson probably envisioned the 2022 season going differently when the franchise traded for him this past off-season.

The Broncos are currently mired in a 4-10 season. Wilson has missed numerous games to injury and concussion.

Wilson returned to the lineup this week, though without his customary “Broncos Country, let’s ride!” ending at his weekly press conference.

Wilson and the Broncos faced Baker Mayfield and the Los Angeles Rams on Christmas. As a way to reach a new generation of fans, the game was simultaneously broadcasted on Nickelodeon, a channel aimed at children.

The arrangement gave way to serene comedy late in the first quarter when the broadcast welcomed Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants onto the broadcast, and the cartoon character promptly called Russell Wilson’s second interception of the game,”

“Yeah, that’s not what he wanted to cook,” Star said, alluding to the old demand of Seattle Seahawks fans to let then-quarterback Russell Wilson cook on offense.

The Broncos surrendered two first-round and two second-round picks as part of the package for Wilson.

The Rams led the Broncos, 24-3, midway through the second quarter as Mayfield outdueled Wilson to start the game. Oddsmakers listed the Broncos as three-point favorites entering the contest.
