It sounds like Justin Fields is preparing to start for the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, but head coach Mike Tomlin was not willing to commit that he would start over Russell Wilson for the rest of the season.

While Russell Wilson was named the team’s starting quarterback to begin the season, he suffered a calf injury just before the first week of the season leaving Justin Fields as the team’s quarterback. Fields has since posted a 3-0 record in his three starts.

Tomlin announced this week that he will not be naming a full-time starting quarterback until Wilson is healthy, leaving the door open for Wilson to re-take the starting job.

“As we walk into the building tomorrow, I want Justin [Fields] singularly focused on starting for us,” Tomlin told reporters this week according to Albert Breer of SI.com. However, he did not fully commit to Fields being the team’s starter.

Tomlin was then asked about why he was leaving the door open and not naming Fields the full-time starter.

” “Because there’s no need, I explained to you the variables of the week,” Tomlin said. “When Russ gets to an appropriate level of health, and I have a decision to make, I’ll make it.”

Needless to say, this announcement led to a lot of reactions on social media.

“This is a lot of words to state the obvious…Russ is taking over when he’s back,” on fan wrote on X.

“Tomlin clearly has wanted Russ to be the #1 and I don’t get why,” another fan wrote.

“Fire Tomlin,” another fan said.

“The Steelers are going to go to Russel Wilson and tank their division and I’m going to LAUGH,” a fan added.

“Oh boy…” another fan wrote.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this situation plays out.
