It’s been widely assumed that second-year quarterback Sam Howell would be the starting quarterback of the Washington Commanders this upcoming NFL season, but now it’s official.

On Friday morning, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera officially announced that Sam Howell would be the team’s starting quarterback this year, and it sounds like Howell is ready to embrace the challenge.

“He just told me that he’s excited for me, he believes in me and he trusts me. To hear that from him means a lot,” Howell said of Rivera according to Pro Football Talk.

Even though Howell only saw action in one game during his rookie season last year, he says that he is confident in leading this team and in his abilities as a quarterback.

“I’m always confident in my abilities. I’m always confident in my ability to come out and perform for this football team,” Howell said.

Still, he also understands that he still has a long way to go in his development.

“All my work is ahead of me,” Howell said. “This is only the beginning, I have a lot of work ahead of me, and that’s what I’m focused on right now.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how Howell performs this season with a chance to lead the offense.
