Over the past few months, the relationship between the New York Giants and star running back Saquon Barkley has not been great, and it appears that it has not gotten all that better in recent days and weeks.
The two sides continue to try to agree to a long-term contract and Saquon Barkley has not ruled out potentially sitting out the entire 2023 season if they do not reach an agreement. And unfortunately for Giants fans, it does not look like the two sides have made much progress in those talks as the deadline nears.
“As we near the deadline for the Giants and Saquon Barkley to strike a long-term deal, I’m told the two sides remain at a stalemate. The deadline to strike a long-term deal is Monday 4pm,” Dianna Russini of ESPN reported on Wednesday morning.

This is a pretty brutal update for the New York Giants as it is looking less and less likely that Barkley will be with the team for the long-term future.

I'm sure Monday will be fun and not controversial at all. https://t.co/LEq7OmC0QU

I'm imagining this will go through the weekend, down to the last waning hours of the deadline. Exactly how they handled the original long-term/tag negotiations with DJ and Saquon back in March. Have to assume this is serious hardball going on. Harsh realities of the NFL business. https://t.co/px6W8NYdeB

I fully understand the desire to be valued and compensated for your work. But I also understand the perspective of the team.
I hope a deal gets done, but I'm fully on board with moving on from Saquon if it came to it. https://t.co/roNVoH7UOF

Feels like the Giants don’t really wanna extend him, or at least are hesitant to, but don’t wanna straight up reject negotiations out of respect for him. Could be wrong, but that’s how it feels after basically no progress has been made for months now.

We’ll have to see whether or not Barkley and the Giants can make some headway on these contract talks before the deadline on Monday, but it’s not exactly looking likely as of now.
