On Wednesday afternoon, news broke that the Arizona Cardinals had received permission to talk to former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton about their head coaching vacancy. And while Payton is one of the most coveted coaches on the market and has interest from a number of other teams including the Denver Broncos, there’s reason to believe he’d be willing to accept the Cardinals coaching job.

As league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network points out, Sean Payton might be particularly interested in the Cardinals coaching job for a number of reasons, including that the Cardinals currently have no general manager in place as well as the presence of Cardinals star quarterback Kyler Murray.

“Mentioned in story with @RapSheet last weekend on looming changes with the #Cardinals that Sean Payton had been doing homework on the Arizona job. He’s a Kyler Murray fan, and with no GM in place, it’d be an opportunity to set up the whole operation,” Pelissero said in a tweet.

There’s no telling what Payton will ultimately choose to do. He’s recently suggested that it’s most likely that he simply returns to his job as an alayst with Fox. But either way, it’s certainly a situation worth paying attention to for NFL fans.
