When new head coach Sean Payton takes over the Denver Broncos this season, he’ll be inheriting a number of players from last year, but he’ll also have quite a few new players he’s brought in himself. And one of those players is former Cincinnati Bengals running back Samaje Perine.
As Sean Payton gets to know his team and evaluates his players, it’s clear that he likes what he sees from his new running back.
“I see position flex,” Payton said according to Jon Heath of USAToday.com. “If you really watch Perine and study the tape, you see him on early downs, and you see him playing third down. He’s a really good receiver. Obviously, he could block the blitz. He’s big, he’s physical, he’s smart, he’s tough. He’s built to last. That was an important piece for us knowing the injury that we’re dealing with. He was really important.”
With starting running back Javonte Williams coming off of a torn ACL and LCL, Perine will be vitally important to the Broncos this season due to his versatility and his ability to handle anything the team could ask him to do at running back. And once Williams returns, he’ll be able to compliment him nicely.
