The Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the biggest turnarounds in the NFL this past season, going from 3-14 in 2021 to 9-8 this past season. Their trajectory is certainly on an upward swing. However, they are shockingly expected to part ways with a former Pro Bowler still in his prime.

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Shaquill Griffin is set to make $11.5 million next season. Instead, it appears that he may be a cap casualty this off-season for Jacksonville.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, The Jaguars are expected to either release or trade Griffin. If they were to release Griffin, they would save $13.1 million in cap space.

It is certainly somewhat of a surprising decision by Jacksonville. Griffin is just four years removed from being named a Pro Bowler when he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks. He is also just 27 years old, so you would assume that his best play is still ahead of him.

One factor that could largely be the reason for this decision is Griffin’s significant injury this past season. He was put on injured reserve in Week 8 after undergoing back surgery.

According to Jordan Schultz of The Score, Griffin has been fully medically cleared, so he should be good to go for whatever team he plays for next season.

Shaquill Griffin could certainly command a ton of potential suitors if he does indeed get released by Jacksonville.

It is also possible that a cornerback-needy team swoops in and potentially trades for him before he does hit the open market.
