The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled out of the gate, but good news emerged out of western Pennsylvania on Thursday. Steelers star T.J. Watt earned AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors after a prodigious September on defense.

The Steelers officially announced Watt’s honors with a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday morning.

“.@_TJWatt has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September!” Pittsburgh announced in the post.

In three games, Watt has already been a terror. The former Wisconsin star has a league-high 6.0 sacks. He became the Steelers’ all-time sacks leader this month, passing some of the greatest of all time, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene, who recently passed away. He’s recorded 83.5 career sacks and, to this point, has led the NFL twice in sacks over his illustrious career. He has four seasons of 10.0+ sacks and could be on his way to a fifth this season with his outstanding production already.

Watt’s also come away with 16 pressures, six QB knockdowns, and four hurries. He’s blitzed 15 times this year. Watt also has 11 tackles, 5 TFLs, and 12 QB hits.

In his career, Watt’s won one Defensive Player of the Year award, placed second another year, and third another. With this kind of production, he’ll end up on the podium again in 2023.
