Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio spoke on Tuesday about the situation around the team and quarterback Deshaun Watson. Things remain as complicated as ever.

Caserio (per Adam Schefter, ESPN) said on Tuesday that the Texans are “day-to-day in terms of handling that.” He added that while the situation seems complicated from the outside, any apparent “strain” the situation has put on the organization has been from outside discussions from media members.

Here’s what we know. In January of 2021, Watson asked to be traded from the Texans. In March, a sexual assault lawsuit was brought against Watson. Shortly thereafter, several other women followed suit. While Watson’s legal situation remained pending, NFL teams reportedly remained interested in trading for him. Despite the rumored interest, no deal was struck, though.

Also, Watson was not formally disciplined by the NFL or the Texans but was inactive for all 17 games of the 2021 season. In other words, his situation is no more clear now than it was a year ago.

With all of that in mind — a strain would only be natural. In fact — given that Houston’s head coaching search was something of a mess — we have to wonder, if there is no strain in the organization, what in the world is going on there? It’s not exactly a smooth operation.

Caserio claiming it’s a day-to-day matter with Watson is to be expected and frankly, that’s what it should be. The situation remains fluid. What’s true today may not be true tomorrow or the next day. So, implementing a long-term plan as it relates to Watson and the quarterback situation would be counter-productive.

But it’s hard to imagine the Texans going much longer with Watson’s situation with the team being in such limbo. If the current path is maintained, any strain currently not being felt will be arriving shortly.
