The Dallas Cowboys had a good first night of the 2016 NFL Draft. They drafted their running back of the future, Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 overall pick, filling a gap that they needed moving forward.

However, the Cowboys were hoping to further cement their future by drafting a quarterback. Specifically, Jerry Jones had Paxton Lynch in mind, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

The Denver Broncos were the team that ended up landing Lynch, as they traded up with the Seattle Seahawks to select the Memphis product with the No. 26 pick.

Securing a quarterback of the future would make sense for the Cowboys. Aside from running back, quarterback was quite the troubled position for the Cowboys last season, as they couldn’t keep Tony Romo on the field, as he dealt with clavicle, back, and shoulder issues throughout 2015.

Romo is 36 years old as of a week ago, and it’s not certain how much more time he has in the league. While he’s been effective the past few seasons, some quarterbacks age better than others, and his injury-filled 2015 is a reason for concern in Jerry World.

With the second and third rounds to come Friday evening, don’t be surprised if the Cowboys select a quarterback. Connor Cook, Christian Hackenberg, Cardale Jones, and Dak Prescott are all guys who could hear their names called tomorrow. Despite not being first-round selections, they are all quarterbacks who had been highly regarded at one point or another.

If the Cowboys decide to wait, the talent drop-off becomes much greater, which would be a big roll of the dice for the team, who had plenty of talent surrounding the quarterback position. Surely they don’t want that to go to waste.
