Veteran quarterback Tim Boyle will make his first start in a Jets uniform on Friday against the Miami Dolphins. And he detailed his mindset going into the matchup with reporters on Tuesday.
It’s been a while since we have seen Boyle in a starting role. The last and only starts of his career came in 2021 with the Detroit Lions, where he started in three games.
Those games didn’t go too well for him or his team. The Lions lost all three of his starts that season, and his stats weren’t exactly anything to write home about.
This leaves some Jets fans not feeling overly optimistic about their Week 12 game against the Dolphins. But according to Boyle, he isn’t the same quarterback as he was with the Lions in 2021.
“I feel like my actual play on the field has changed since then,” Boyle said via Dennis Waszak Jr. of Yahoo Sports. “I came off my thumb injury and those three starts I had in Detroit, I didn’t really feel like myself. I felt like I was healthy enough to play, but truthfully, I really didn’t feel like I was confident. So, I’m just coming back to myself and believing in myself.”
Confidence is certainly a key factor in any quarterback’s success. But Boyle further added that “being dangerous” is another important aspect on the field. And he plans to be exactly that in his Jets debut.
“You’ve got to feel like you’re dangerous out there,” Boyle added. “You can’t go into a play or a series thinking with any doubt. Confidence is critical going in there and feeling like I’m the guy and that I’m not going to miss. That’s kind of the focus.”
Only time will tell whether Boyle’s “dangerous” mindset will be enough to help the Jets struggling offense on Friday. But it certainly seems like the veteran QB is ready for his latest opportunity to prove himself on the field.
