The Tennessee Titans have moved in on their choice for the team’s open general manager position.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Tennessee has reportedly finalized its hire. Rapoport said the team will hire San Francisco 49ers executive Ran Carthon. Rapoport tweeted, “Sources: The Titans have finalized the hire of 49ers executive Ran Carthon as their new GM.”

Carthon held the title of Director of pro personnel with the 49ers since 2017, when John Lynch took over as the team’s general manager. Prior to that, Carthon served as Director of player personnel with the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams from 2012-2016. That followed his first job in the NFL as a pro scout for the Atlanta Falcons from 2008-2011.

Carthon had played football for the University of Florida, so he is no stranger to the state of Tennessee. Carthon played on the 2000 Gators team that won the SEC Championship. He went undrafted in the historic 2004 NFL Draft but was eventually signed by the Indianapolis Colts. He played for the Colts for nearly three seasons, but joined the Detroit Lions’ practice squad in 2006 after parting ways with the Colts.

The 49ers certainly have among the best and deepest rosters in the entire NFL. From top to bottom, the team is loaded. Given Carthon’s position, you can argue he certainly has a lion’s share of the credit there. The Titans are hoping so and that they can bounce-back after a disappointing 2022.
