Fans of the old-school Houston Oilers logo and uniforms are in for a treat.
Tennessee Titans reporter Jim Wyatt reports that the team plans to wear those classic Oilers throwback uniforms in a game next season.
And of course, the Titans have the perfect opponent to wear those uniforms against:
The Houston Texans.
“The plan is to wear them for a home game in 2023,” Wyatt wrote on TennesseeTitans.com. “The exact game is still TBD, but I’ve already said I suspect it will be for the game vs. the Texans.”
The Oilers, an original American Football League franchise, played in Houston from 1960 through 1996 before relocating to Nashville. They were renamed the Titans in 1999. Those Oilers uniforms with the oil derrick logo are one of the most popular NFL retro looks.
Surprisingly, the team has not worn the Oilers’ uniforms since 2009, when they donned the gear in one preseason and one regular season game. The reason they did not wear the throwbacks in the years since was an NFL “one helmet” rule which was recently rescinded, that barred teams from wearing more than one helmet in a season.
After the NFL rescinded that rule last year, Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk noted the team was ready to go with the Oilers look.
“Oilers history is Titans history,” Adams Strunk said. “We know our fans feel passionately about showcasing that legacy on game day, and we’re actively working on making throwback jerseys possible in the near future.”
