Though Tom Brady spent the final years of his storied NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the majority of his time was spent with the New England Patriots playing for Bill Belichick. And with Brady now officially retired from the league, it sounds like he’s grateful for the time he spent working with Belichick.

During an interview with ESPN for SportsCenter this week, Tom Brady opened up about his relationship with Bill Belichick, saying that he was “very fortunate” to have been able to play for Belichick in his career.

“He very much trusted what I was out there doing in the field, and it went both ways. Ultimately our success was because so many people in the organization, as coach Belichick always said, ‘do your job,’ and I did as quarterback and leader,” Brady told ESPN of his relationship with Belichick. Brady added that he “learned so much from him” and that the two “have a lot of mutual respect.”

Brady also said that their relationship extended beyond Brady’s time with the Patriots, revealing that Belichick “was one of the first people to text me after we won the Super Bowl in Tampa.”

“Were there times where you know it wasn’t always eye to eye? Very few and far between, actually. I still envision our relationship as positive and always will,” Brady said of his relationship with Belichick.
