A report Tuesday that Tom Brady and wife Gisele Bündchen have hired divorce attorneys left fans picking sides as the once-storybook romance crumbles.

Some fans have determined that the couple’s reported breakup is totally the fault of … ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.

This makes sense only in some bizarre place, which perfectly describes the Twittersphere. But Twitter came alive Tuesday with fans posting memes and otherwise blaming Schefter for Brady’s marital woes. You’ll recall how in January, Schefter reported that Brady was retiring. That led to immediate denials from Brady’s camp. (Never mind that Brady’s own @TB12sports Twitter account tweeted a tribute with a “Thank you for it all, @TomBrady” message before deleting the tweet.)

Yet despite what NFL insiders thought to be a true and well-sourced report by Schefter, Brady returned to play another season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — reportedly much to the chagrin of Bündchen.

Of course, their relationship has been under a microscope in recent weeks, with reports of separate living arrangements and other sad signs of a marriage on the ropes. The rumor that Brady decided to “unretire” and play this season to spite Schefter has been out there for months. Now, fans are running with that rumor and deciding that, if it’s true, then Schefter is to blame for Brady’s marital woes.
