Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s future as a game analyst at CBS is uncertain following an OWI arrest after a golf tournament. Romo has since pleaded no contest to a civil offense and taken full responsibility for his actions.
“This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely. Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant debilitating pain. The pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol,” Romo wrote.
At the time, he also alluded to a return to his role as CBS’s lead NFL game analyst, as he is currently on an indefinite leave.
“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know. As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and in time my return to CBS I kindly ask for privacy during this period,” he added.
On Wednesday, the Romo made his official return to the public eye for the first time since his arrest as he competed in a professional golf tournament, a pre-qualifying event for the PGA Tour Q-School by Korn Ferry.

Romo shot a 76 (4-over) in the first round, tying him for 48th in the field and nine shots behind the leader with two rounds to go.
In August, CBS Sports President David Berson made it clear there was no timetable for Romo to return to his seat in CBS’ top broadcast booth, or any booth for that matter.
“There’s no timetable or final decision at this time,” Berson said. “Since it continues to evolve and we’re on the eve of the season, I felt it’s very important that our team, the many, many hundreds of people who work on the NFL on CBS, have certainty and direction so we can definitively plan and focus on the production and marketing as we kick off the season. In making this decision, we had to consider the impact on our image and on our brand. That’s very important to us. Whether the games, marketing, PR, social, the focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any other factors.”
Romo has been replaced in the booth by former NFL defensive lineman J.J. Watt, who has received mixed reviews thus far.
