Former NFL player and CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo was arrested and cited for suspicion of drunk driving in July. Last weekend, a spokesperson released a statement on Romo’s behalf, saying he ‘takes full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure this isolated civil matter is properly resolved.’ Today, Romo has issued his first public statement since his OWI arrest.
In the post, Romo discloses he pleaded no contest to a civil offense and took full responsibility for his actions. He also addressed his personal struggles with pain medication and alcohol stemming from back injuries he sustained during play.
“This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely. Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant debilitating pain. The pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol,” Romo wrote.
Romo also alluded to a return to his role as CBS’s lead NFL game analyst, as he is currently on an indefinite leave.
“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know. As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and in time my return to CBS I kindly ask for privacy during this period,” Romo added.
CBS Sports recently promoted former Houston Texan linebacker, JJ Watt, to lead NFL broadcaster behind Romo’s OWI arrest and subsequent indefinite leave from the network. Watt will join the likes of Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as he replaces Romo for the time being.
