Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has begun to work with his new teammate, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, and he’s been impressed enough to make it publicly known that it’s his preference for Hunter to focus on the offensive side of the ball.
“He’s so talented, it’s hard to keep him off the field,” Lawrence said of Hunter. “Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more. And I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two?
“That’s a decision you have to make. He’ll make plays wherever he is, but obviously, as a quarterback, I hope he plays more on offense. Wherever he plays to make us better, because he will make us better, I’m all for wherever that is.”
Now, Hunter is letting everyone know, Lawrence included, that playing that way isn’t that difficult for a player of his caliber, insinutating that he has every intention of continuing to do so.
“It’s not hard at all, if I’m being honest,” Hunter said in an appearance on Up and Adams. “The first off day that we had and I came back and did both sides, that’s the only thing that got to me. After that, I’ve been good.”
Fans reacted to Hunter’s statement on social media.
“This kid…. Setting himself up for a big fall….even if it’s not (which he’s only in camp) he should down play the whole thing to not have to answer when it inevitably becomes a struggle week 8,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“The goal is to win games, and hard to believe he can play every down at a high level Lets see them win some games,” one person added.
“The game is too physical these days. No way he can stay healthy playing both ways. The human body has limits. And enough with the Ohtani comparisons. Baseball does not require being bulldozed by 250lb+ men,” wrote someone else.
It’ll be interesting to see how Hunte does in his first NFL action against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.
