The career of former top-five draft pick Trent Richardson is already a sad story, as he couldn’t catch on in Cleveland, Indianapolis, Oakland, and now Baltimore. Just days after he was released by the Ravens — which might be the end of his brief NFL career — he told ESPN’s Shelley Smith on E:60 that friends and family weren’t as helpful to him as they should have been.

Between January and October of last year, friends and family of Richardson’s spent $1.6 million of his money, including 11 separate Netflix accounts and eight Hulu accounts registered under his name. Some of them even ordered bottle service at clubs by dropping his name, which is a problem considering Richardson is sober.

“I finally just looked at my bank statement, and I was just like, ‘Where did this come from? Where did that come from?’” Richardson said. “And my guy was sitting there telling me, ‘Man, we was telling you.’ I know he was telling me, but that’s just like telling a kid to stop running in the hall. They’re going to still do it when you turn your back or you leave.”

“It’s just one of them moments to where I was just blinded by my heart, by loving everybody and thinking that everyone was for me. I know they love me. I know they do care. But at the time, they took advantage of it.”

He signed a fully guaranteed, $20.5 million deal when he was drafted in 2012 by the Browns. He says that he’s not totally broke and can support his immediate family but has spent a lot of time recently shaving costs, although he says there was money missing that he can never get back.

Sadly, stories like this among athletes that suddenly come into their fortunes are all too commonplace, and it’s good to see Richardson making it public and trying to fix it.
