The Jacksonville Jaguars have arguably the most exciting rookie in NFL history in Travis Hunter. Hunter is looking to become the first player to ever consistently play on both sides of the ball at the professional level, as both a cornerback and wide receiver and to star at that.
However, Hunter’s new quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, isn’t quite as sold on the idea of the young phenom playing both sides of the ball at an equal clip.
“He’s so talented, it’s hard to keep him off the field,” Lawrence said of his new teammate, according to Pro Football Talk. “Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more. And I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two?
“That’s a decision you have to make.’ He’ll make plays wherever he is, but obviously, as a quarterback, I hope he plays more on offense. Wherever he plays to make us better, because he will make us better, I’m all for wherever that is.”
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams has also expressed skepticism about Hunter’s ability to play both ways.
“I don’t even think it’s possible to do, for real. Not at a high level. That’s just a lot of mileage, man. I’m not even concerned so much if he can do it over the course of a game or a season,” he said of Hunter playing both ways.
“It’s more like, how long is his career going to be if he’s playing that many snaps? All you’re doing is doubling your risk for injury, one, and I don’t wish any of that on him. I hope that he can play an injury-free season and go ball out. But it’s just the reality. The more you’re on the field. It’s already a 100% injury guarantee.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out.
