The Cincinnati Bengals are looking to get back to the playoffs after a two-year drought. To keep the Bengals’ title window open under star quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals signed his two top targets, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to massive extensions this offseason.
Unfortunately for the Bengals, another star player who has not received his payday is not happy about how things are unfolding and is deciding not to involve himself with mandatory team activities until something changes.
“The #Bengals and reigning NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson have made no progress on a multiyear contract extension and he’s not expected to report for minicamp today, sources tell me and (Ian Rapoport). The standoff continues,” reported NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Give the guy a deal. He deserves it. The Bengals are going hold him hostage and make him play out the last year of his deal. Then they will franchise him and continue to hold him hostage. The Bengals are a poorly run organization.
“If they would pay him 30 million a year for 3yrs they could save money against the cap to better their roster. But, by stringing along Hendrickson they will pay his 18.6 million this year and franchise(32mil) him next year locking him into a no win situation for a player in his age 31 season. The Bengals would rather not save money against the cap and strong arm a good employee,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“After the year they’ve had you’d think they’d want to avoid that gameplay again, guess not,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the situation is resolved.
