Despite the San Francisco 49ers going all-in on Trey Lance as their starting quarterback this upcoming season, there are some NFL coaches who believe the team is making a mistake by letting last year’s starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo go.

Jimmy G led his team to the NFC Championship Game the past season and, according to a recent poll of anonymous NFL personnel, he was ranked 16th overall in the league out of 35 quarterbacks. Lance ranked 29th overall in the poll.

While the Niners are ready for the Trey Lance era to begin, some current coaches are scratching their heads.

“That would be like my early Christmas present if they just get rid of Jimmy, so that way he can’t play for them, and then make Trey be your guy,” one anonymous NFL coach told The Athletic.

Another NFL head coach compared Lance to former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow because of his poor mechanics.

Some of the criticism that Garoppolo received included that he isn’t a great downfield passer and isn’t a great runner, two things that Lance apparently can do better than him. At least last year, however, Lance wasn’t able to overtake Garoppolo, spending most of the season on the bench.

Now, the 49ers and their fans will see if the team’s gamble on Lance pays off as all signs point to Garoppolo being traded very soon.
