The San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback room went through serious attrition in 2022. All four quarterbacks on the team suffered an injury at one point or another. The first that sustained an injury was former first-round pick, Trey Lance. Lance suffered a severe ankle injury that held him out for the entire season.

On Tuesday, for the first time in a while, Lance was optimistic about his status. The Niners quarterback told reporters he was close to returning back to activities.

Matt Barrows, 49ers reporter for The Athletic, tweeted on Tuesday, “Trey Lance says he’s 3-4 weeks from being fully cleared for practice. He said he’ll be 100 percent for OTAs.”

Lance also shared that he was “excited to compete” and hasn’t yet talked to head coach Kyle Shanahan about the plans for QB in 2023.

Lance has been hit with terrible injury luck and hasn’t played a full season in a very long time now. The 2021 first-rounder is hoping to still get a shot even as the Niners deal with their big array of quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to become a free agent, which could give way to an opportunity for Lance.

But, will he usurp the sensational Brock Purdy? Purdy, too, has an injury he has to recover from now. The QB battle in the Bay Area expects to remain one of the most fascinating storylines of the off-season.

The NFL world reacted to the huge health update that Lance provided on Tuesday.
