Things have not exactly gone to plan for the San Francisco 49ers this season, but they have made the best of a bad situation with Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm following a disastrous injury to starting quarterback Trey Lance earlier this year. We now have an update on Lance’s recovery process from 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Lance was present for the team’s preparation ahead of Monday’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals, which Shanahan said was a welcome sight.
“It was cool just getting him to travel with this for the first time out in Colorado,” said Shanahan (via Pro Football Talk). “He’s preparing like he’s playing except for everything on the field,”
As far as Lance’s physical recovery, Shanahan detailed that while the second-year quarterback isn’t expected to be ready for a potential postseason run, he is “on schedule with everything.”
“I haven’t been told there’s a chance, so I think things would have to be pretty drastic,” Shanahan added. “We weren’t expecting that much from the beginning, I think he’s right on schedule with everything, but I’ve not been told there’s a chance.”
Many 49ers fans are extremely pleased to hear that Lance’s recovery process is going well.
Even if he was healthy, would the niners really want to turn to a guy who hasn’t practiced or played all year following a jimmy injury in a playoff game?

So he’s also not, not been told either? https://t.co/tmCBuY7hRD

Riiiiight. If he’s not in the playoff roster that’s a huge mismanagement. https://t.co/aOPMV0p9gj

Why is Kyle so adamant that Lance won’t be available at least for playoffs? Timetable for that injury makes it possible he could play again.

They couldn’t possibly replace Jimmy at this point right?

Garoppolo — playing on a restructured one-year contract — has played extremely well in Lance’s absence, which will certainly make for another difficult decision for the 49ers’ front office this offseason.
