With the San Francisco 49ers looking to trade former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, second-year quarterback Trey Lance is now the team’s starter heading into the 2022-23 season. And while the Niners have made it clear he’s their top quarterback, he wasn’t exactly impressive in his final preseason game.
In Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Houston Texans, Lance played three series and went 7-of-11 for 49 yards through the air, leading the 49ers to no points. Even Lance was underwhelmed by his performance, revealing that he could have played better.
“It never feels good to lose,” Lance said according to 49ersWebzone.com. “But we’ll learn from it, turn the page. Not going to make a bigger deal out of it than we need to, for sure. . . . Some ugly stuff out there, for sure. It definitely wasn’t our best night, but, like I said, we’re not going to make too big of a deal out of it. Watch the tape tomorrow, learn from it, get better.”
While Lance is still young and there’s plenty of time for him to grow as a passer and a quarterback over the next few years, there are no more preseason games. When he takes the field against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 11, he’ll have to be much sharper, because the losses will start to count.
