Skipper became a camp sensation a few years when he recorded five sacks in the preseason for the Steelers. Undrafted out of Toledo, the linebacker appeared in 10 NFL regular-season games, all over the 2019-20 seasons for the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans. He has a half-sack, eight tackles, and a fumble recovery to his credit.
Last year, Skipper was in training camp with the Atlanta Falcons but nothing materialized.
The Steelers seem to be thin at the outside linebacker position after TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith. They also struggled at times last year and needed more experience to help them, although their defense played better than their offense. Pittsburgh’s defense was ranked in the middle of the pack at 14th. But where they really struggled was at pass coverage, where they ranked 24th in the league.
The Steelers eventually will have to solve their secondary problems or that will continue to be an issue going forward, but it doesn’t hurt to have a good front seven and solid linebacker corp to make life easier for the secondary.
