While Urban Meyer has been making headlines in recent days, his wife has been getting the brunt of it on social media.
Videos and photos of Meyer with a young woman at a bar went viral over the weekend. Meanwhile, his wife Shelley had tweeted a photo of herself and their grandkids at home around the same time. While Meyer mentioned that he had been out to dinner with his wife right before the infamous bar incident, there seems to be some obvious confusion about that.
While Urban has apologized and is dealing with the fallout with his employer and players, Shelley has been getting lots of people commenting on the situation to her on Twitter. As you can imagine, many of those comments have been mean, obnoxious, and offensive. So, she has announced in a tweet on Thursday that she plans to leave the platform.
“This will be my last post on Twitter,” reads Shelley’s tweet. “Frankly, I don’t need the hate, vitriol, slander, trash that will @ me.
“We all make mistakes. We are all sinners. If you think you aren’t? Then cast the first stone.
“To my wonderful followers/friends: THANK YOU. For your love, support, friendship, laughs – I will miss this the most. I love you ALL and wish God’s blessings on you. Thank you.”
Shelley added at the end that she “will be deleting right as I post so I will not see responses.” It appears that means she has deleted the Twitter app as her actual account is still live and active.
Meyer had found herself in controversy before this past weekend’s incident. The registered nurse has been a strong anti-vaccine proponent for a while, which raised eyebrows considering she was acting in some manner as a counselor and discipline guru for the Jaguars on Urban’s behalf. It’s unclear if she had an official role or not.
Shelley Meyer says she will be leaving Twitter (I'm skeptical how permanent this would be)
While she undoubtedly has been taking a lot of unnecessary abuse and trolling of late, this would/will put an end to the constant stream of dangerous Covid misinformation she posts. pic.twitter.com/HjmwndQ5Vn

We’ll see if Shelley’s Twitter departure is permanent or not. The fact that she didn’t actually delete the account leads some to believe she’ll be back once everything has died down. But in the meantime, Urban is likely to remain the news and the comments are sure to continue.
