It is not known who the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals will be. But we know that it will not be defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Joseph has been Arizona’s defensive coordinator since 2019, the same year that Kliff Kingsbury was hired as head coach. And when the Cardinals fired Kingsbury, Joseph was not fired. Mike Silver of Bally Sports reported on Sunday night that Joseph will not be Arizona’s next head coach. He also added that Joseph might have a hard time finding even another assistant’s job for the 2023 season if whoever the next Cardinals coach is doesn’t retain him.
“Cardinals DC Vance Joseph has been informed he is out of contention for the team’s head coaching job. Joseph remains under contract and is thus unable to pursue DC jobs elsewhere–sources say there has been a lot of interest…If the new Cardinals HC decides not to keep Joseph he could be out in the cold,” Silver said, in a pair of tweets.

Before going to Arizona, Joseph was head coach of the Denver Broncos for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He went 11-21 in his two-year stint with Denver. So, Joseph will definitely be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to any future head coaching vacancies.
The Cardinals were one of five teams with a head coaching vacancy entering the offseason. The Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos have filled their openings with the hires of Frank Reich, DeMeco Ryans and Sean Payton, respectively. Only the Arizona and Indianapolis Colts jobs remain unfilled.
