The Washington Commanders had high hopes for the 2022-2023 NFL season. However, after an 8-8-1 finish, they’re the only team in the NFC East that didn’t make the playoffs. While the future of the franchise remains in flux, many fans were hoping to see a coaching change, with some hoping that head coach Ron Rivera might get fired.
That specific thing didn’t happen, at least not yet, but the Commanders did fire a notable coach on Tuesday.
The franchise relieved Scott Turner of his duties as offensive coordinator.
“I met with Coach Turner today and informed him that we will be moving in another direction going forward with the offensive coordinator position,” Rivera said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we did not live up to the expectations and standard that I expected to see from our offensive unit. I felt it was best for a fresh start at the coordinator position heading into next year. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Scott and thanked him for his three years of service to our organization. I wish Scott and his family all the best in the future.”
Washington’s offense was pretty miserable all season long, regardless of who was playing quarterback. They finished 20th in total offense, averaging 330.3 yards per game with 126.1 yards rushing and 204.2 yards passing.
Turner came aboard with Rivera when he became head coach in 2020 after coaching the Carolina Panthers’ quarterbacks for two seasons.
There are lots more changes ahead for the Commanders, to be sure.
