The Washington Commanders spent time as the Washington Football Team following their change from Redskins moniker, in a move of respect for Native Americans and to stop perpetuating racial stereotypes.
However, there is a large portion of the fanbase who want the Redskins’ mascot reinstated for the franchise. While the franchise isn’t quite going that far, it made a move that fans of the Redskins name are sure to appreciate.
“Weaving past and present We’re adding back the Super Bowl Era threads to our uniform rotation,” the Commanders tweeted from their official Twitter account, along with a photo of their new alternate uniforms, which pay homage to their Redskins days.
Fans reacted to the new jerseys on social media.
“Like why are these not the full time uniforms?? So infinitely better than the current one,” one fan on Twitter wanted to know.
“Well done! Great step in the right direction. Everything back to the original style, down to the stripes on the socks, helmet, and pants. Even the numbers are amazing! The “w” font still is not my favorite; would love to see an evolution of this, but in general, this is a huge improvement and should be the regular uniform, NOT the alternate,” one fan added.
“Perfect. Honor the good history of the team while moving forward from the bad history,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Commanders eventually turn these jerseys from alternates to the permanent ones.
