The Washington Commanders made a big move this offseason to attempt to fix their quarterback situation, trading for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz in a move that drew mixed reactions from Commanders fans.

The writing was on the wall for Wentz following an embarrassing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 18 of the regular season, causing the team to miss out on the playoffs.

Now Wentz will be on his third team in as many years and attempt to revive a once very promising career in Washington.

It appears he has the full backing of Commanders’ head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera spoke very highly of the former Pro-Bowl quarterback when asked about the trade on Thursday.

“I believe it’s what we’re looking for,” Rivera said to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “His skill set speaks very well for us, especially for what we want to do and how we want to attack our opponent.”

“This trade doesn’t preclude us from anything, but he is our QB1 going forward. I’d love to see this be a very long tenure, and I really mean that.”

Despite some obvious struggles down the stretch for the Colts, Wentz did have a much better 2021 than his 2020 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, throwing for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

Wentz’s issues have always been winning the big game, which he failed to do yet again this past season. But it looks like he will be given every opportunity to be successful in Washington, if Rivera’s comments are any indication of the franchise’s stance on Wentz.
