Dallas Cowboys reserve quarterback Will Grier got some bad news this week when the team traded for former San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance as it became clear that he no longer has a place on the roster this year. But he will have one major opportunity before he’s ultimately cut.
As Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports, the Dallas Cowboys will certainly cut Grier before Tuesday’s 53-man roster is finalized. But before that happens, he’ll get a chance to play the entire preseason game, which should serve as an audition for any other team potentially wishing to sign him.
“Grier is absolutely the odd man out,” Gehlken wrote on Saturday.
“Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Lance will be quarterbacks on the roster to begin the season. Grier will be cut in the days ahead. But in the interim, Grier is expected to play all of Saturday’s exhibition, guiding a Cowboys offense for the final time. Thirty-one other NFL clubs will evaluate the game film he produces, and composure he demonstrates, during a whirlwind weekend.”
“This is his last stand,” Gehlken concluded.
It’s not great news for Grier that he will be cut, but he still has an opportunity to prove himself to other teams.
