Zach Wilson on a boat in Cabo.

The strangest NFL story this week has perhaps been around 22-year-old New York Jets’ quarterback Zach Wilson. This started late Sunday night, when someone blasted Wilson’s ex-girlfriend Abby Gile  on social media as being a “homie hopper” (presumably because Gile is now dating Wilson’s former BYU Cougars teammate Dax Milne, who now plays for the Washington Commanders). Gile responded by saying Wilson (seen above in an Instagram photo he posted two weeks ago from Cabo San Lucas) “was sleeping with his mom’s best friend … that’s the real homie hopper.”

Gile quickly deleted that post, and her entire Instagram account. But the story kept spreading, from Wilson’s mom posting a 30-minute video complaining about social media to Colin Cowherd trying (and failing) to identify the friend in question to The New York Post reporting on the comments left on Instagram for Nicolette Dellanno (identified as the woman with Wilson at a Yankees’ game last month, although it’s not clear if she’s the woman Gile was referencing). Meanwhile, Wilson finally chimed in in very funny fashion Wednesday, posting “Poor cell service…what I miss?” to Instagram as part of a post about his Idaho ranch workout with teammates. That drew quite the emojis from teammates and other NFL players:

An Instagram post from Zach Wilson on "What I miss?"

What drew even more wide internet reaction, however, was a comment from Janet Gretzky (wife of former NHL player and current TNT analyst Wayne Gretzky, and a former actress and Playboy cover model herself) on Wayne’s post about meeting Wilson and other players:

Wayne Gretzky posted about meeting Zach Wilson.

That is…unfortunate timing. The Gretzkys may not have been aware of the internet stories circulating about Wilson, but the internet sure was.

Particularly considering the media market he plays in, this is probably not the last time we’ll see the internet discussing Wilson’s love life. So anyone else commenting on him should be aware of the reaction that might get.
