The Baltimore Ravens made Lamar Jackson’s signing official on Thursday. Though, to do so, the Ravens needed to show a different level of commitment to the former MVP. And that started with Baltimore adding to its wide receiver room. Not only did the Ravens sign Odell Beckham, Jr. to a massive contract extension, but they also nabbed Boston College’s Zay Flowers with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Ravens were in on both receivers for the majority of the offseason and NFL Draft process, so there’s a bit of irony that there’s already a relationship between Flowers and Beckham. That would likely explain why they were able to FaceTime with each other right after Flowers heard his name called just a week ago.
During his introductory press conference, Flowers made a shocking revelation regarding Beckham’s decision process. While Beckham was rumored to be between the Ravens and New York Jets, Flowers revealed that it was actually a different New York team that Beckham was considering signing with.
“We have the same trainer back in Florida; my receiver coach trains him, too,” Flowers said, via the Ravens Wire. “He’s watched some of my videos, and he was like, ‘We have to get together and work out.’ I think a couple of weeks ago, I called him and I was like, ‘Where are you thinking about going?’ He was like, ‘Either the Ravens or the Giants,’ I think. I was like, ‘That’s crazy because both of those teams I’m predicted to go to.’ Then, we land on the same team. So, I can just use him to learn because it’s going to be my first year; I can learn everything from him and just play with him. It’ll be fun.”
As fate will have it, it seems like Flowers and Beckham were meant to play with one another. We’ll have to see how they complement one another on the field once the 2023 NFL season rolls around, though.
