Tensions have been high between the United States and Canada after the tariffs Trump imposed on Canada and his continued insistence on adding Canada to the U.S. as the 51st state. But thanks to a win in the 4 Nations Face-Off, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau got the chance to send Donald Trump a brutal message.
On Thursday night, the United States took on Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Final. Before the game, Donald Trump took to social media to call out Canada while expressing his support for the United States.
“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Trump went on to taunt Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him “Governor Trudeau.”
“I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting!” Trump wrote in his post.
Of course, Canada came out on top in the game, beating the United States by a score of 3-2 thanks to an overtime game-winning goal from Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.
The win provided a chance for Trudeau to send a brutal message in response to Donald Trump.
“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau wrote in a post on X.
It’s worth noting that this is actually just the first time Canada has beaten the United States in hockey since 2010.
Clearly, Trudeau did not want to waste the opportunity to taunt Trump a little bit after a hard-fought victory for Canada on the ice.
The United States and Canada will have a chance to face off again on the ice in a couple of years at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy where Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo will serve as the official host cities for the event.
We’ll have to see which team comes out on top on the world’s biggest stage next time.
