When the Philadelphia Flyers announced that Gritty would be their new mascot, most of the comments were about how creepy he was. We took a different stance, saying that the Flyers had an opportunity to make a memorable mascot who may actually be insane. Trying something different could be extremely entertaining to watch. Well, the Flyers listened, and Gritty has been making headlines with his behavior. And now he destroyed the penalty box.

Sent to the box during an intermission game between youth players, Gritty took out his anger on whatever item he could get his hands on. Pucks, towels and other items were chucked over the glass. Unfortunately, Gritty actually broke the glass from its stanchions.

Is this the first time a mascot has broken the glass in a hockey game? It’s pretty rare to see the glass come out during a game, let alone during an intermission game between youth hockey players. We’re going to assume that wasn’t part of the plan.

Like him or not, Gritty has transcended hockey in just a few short weeks. His popularity is soaring, and the Flyers have a real success on their hands as long as they continue to keep trying new ideas. But maybe they shouldn’t let Gritty bang on the glass.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, Gritty was the only one showing some real emotion on Monday night as the team sank 4-1 to the Colorado Avalanche.
