Mitch Marner is an electric, skilled player who has impressed the league with his consistent all-out effort as a rookie. But, on Thursday, his relentless pursuit of the puck turned into an unfortunate stumble.

During the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 win against the Nashville Predators, Marner chased P.K. Subban behind the Preds’ net. After cutting around behind the goal, Marner took a violent tumble.

At first, it appeared Marner was elbowed by Subban, but the replay showed the rookie’s stick got stuck in the net. In summary, Marner clotheslined himself. Thankfully, the stick didn’t make contact with Marner’s head.

I’m sure he received some ribbing from his teammates for the fall, but Marner shouldn’t be embarrassed. He fell chasing Subban – a star defenseman and puck carrier – off the puck. It was an excellent example of a hard-working forechecking. Wrong result, but the right play.

Plus, Marner ended up getting the last laugh against the Preds. After assisting on James Van Riemsdyk’s first-period goal, Marner set the Maple Leafs rookie record for assists in a single season with 41. It’s a damn impressive mark for someone who’s not even 20-years-old yet. Marner hasan incredibly bright future in the NHL.

It’s an unfortunate gaffe, but Marner wasn’t hurt and it didn’t lead to a goal. I think he’ll be OK with the slip at the end of the day.
