Riley Sheahan can take a big sigh of relief. The extremely unlucky Detroit Red Wings forward finally scored his first goal in the final game of the season. In doing so, he narrowly avoided going down in the history books with an ugly NHL record.

Sheahan nearly became the first forward in league history to appear in every single game and not score while taking at least 100 shots.

Thankfully, on Sunday against the New Jersey Devils, Sheahan ended his personal nightmare by scoring in the first period.

You just watched Sheahan get an enormous weight lifted off his shoulder. You don’t want to be the first forward to break a record for the wrong reason. I can’t imagine how stressful it would be to play every single game and not score while firing over a hundred shots. Now Sheahan doesn’t have to either.

The strange thing about the season-long slump is Sheahan’s actually a decent forward. He’s scored at least 13 goals in two straight seasons and appeared destined to take a jump with big changes to the Red Wings top-six. Instead of approaching the 20 goal mark, Sheahan couldn’t score if his life depended on it.

Weirdly enough, Sheahan’s last goal occurred exactly one year ago on this date. If you’re a betting man or woman, now’s the time to put in a wager on Sheahan scoring on April 9, 2018. It’s bound to happen. Let’s make this a thing.

It’s great to see Sheahan finally get one in such a dramatic way. Don’t expect him to go so long without a goal next season – well, unless he’s the unluckiest player in NHL history.
