The Ottawa Senators got a very surprising return from veteran forward Clarke MacArthur in the team’s 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

MacArthur hadn’t played since suffering a concussion in an Ottawa game on Oct. 14, 2015 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He most recently suffered a concussion during training camp in September, and has suffered four concussions over the last 21 months.

In January, the Senators announced that MacArthur would not play this season due to post-concussion syndrome. But in a stunning turn of events, MacArthur returned to practice with the Senators last month, and was medically cleared to play a week ago.

MacArthur was understandably very emotional after making his unexpected return to the ice:

The 31-year-old’s story could become even more incredible if he’s able to help get the Senators reach the playoffs. Ottawa (94 points) is currently right in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff picture with just three games remaining.
