The United States women’s hockey team has declined an invitation to celebrate their gold medal with Donald Trump at the State of the Union address. Now, Trump is being mocked by the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom following that decision.

While inviting the men’s team to the White House to celebrate their gold medal, Trump extended what many perceived to be a halfhearted invitation to the women’s squad, too.

“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that?” Trump told the men’s team.

“I do believe I probably would be impeached,” he joked.

However, the team decided to decline the invitation from Trump, citing scheduling conflicts following the Olympics.

“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” a USA Hockey spokesperson said in a statement. “Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”

The spokesperson did note that the players were “honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment.”

Following this decision from the U.S. women’s team, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, mocked Trump on social media.

“Clearly they prefer arenas where women are actually respected! As they should,” Siebel Newsom wrote on X Monday.

Needless to say, this is a pretty clear shot at Trump from the wife of perhaps his biggest political competitor.
